Matthew 14:22-33

Gospel according to Matthew 14:22-33

And Jesus promptly compelled his disciples to climb into the boat, and to precede him in crossing the sea, while he dismissed the crowds. And having dismissed the multitude, he ascended alone onto a mountain to pray. And when evening arrived, he was alone there. But in the midst of the sea, the boat was being tossed about by the waves. For the wind was against them. Then, in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea. And seeing him walking upon the sea, they were disturbed, saying: “It must be an apparition.” And they cried out, because of fear. And immediately, Jesus spoke to them, saying: “Have faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.” Then Peter responded by saying, “Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you over the waters.” And he said, “Come.” And Peter, descending from the boat, walked over the water, so as to go to Jesus. Yet truly, seeing that the wind was strong, he was afraid. And as he began to sink, he cried out, saying: “Lord, save me.” And immediately Jesus extended his hand and took hold of him. And he said to him, “O little in faith, why did you doubt?” And when they had ascended into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat drew near and adored him, saying: “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

Reflections

In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us through a miracle. Nothing is impossible to God and we are safe if we trust and rely on him!

There are strong winds blowing over the lake when Jesus’ disciples row all night to cross. By dawn, they are exhausted! And there, in the middle of the lake, a man advances toward the boat. The disciples are terrified. They think it is a phantom or a ghost. But Jesus reassures them that it is him. Peter, who is not yet sure that it is Jesus, asks him to make a miracle and let him walk on the lake. Jesus says: “Come!” Peter believes that Jesus can do anything but not yet sure that it is him. So he asks for a proof.

When he steps out, he can advance a few steps. But as soon as he looks again and he sees the raging waves he doubts that this is possible and he immediately begins to sink. Jesus grabs him by the arm and lifts him up. The disciples are all astonished. No one can do this, except God!

Difficulties may come our way like waves. At times they may seem overwhelming. With God’s help we can walk on water and do what may be impossible to humans but possible to God!
